Crafting a New Legacy: Japan's Vision for Sustainable Tourism

Japan's "New Legacy Formation Project" is an innovative initiative aimed at creating enduring tourist attractions that will continue to draw visitors, both domestically and internationally, into the future. Launched in fiscal year 2024, the project encompasses feasibility studies and plan development across various regions, conducted by local transport bureaus in collaboration with the Japan Tourism Agency and regional public entities.

The initiative's goal is to identify and develop high-quality projects that could become representative attractions of Japan, focusing on the utilization of historical buildings, natural landscapes, food, culture, and heritage. These projects are not just about preserving the past but actively integrating it with modern tourism to create a unique, sustainable legacy that enhances visitor experiences and contributes to regional revitalization.

The concept of legacy formation is broad, ranging from the restoration and utilization of historical buildings for lodging and other purposes, as seen in Kagawa Prefecture's Ritsurin Garden, to the comprehensive or thematic recreation and utilization of natural landscapes, culinary arts, cultural practices, and heritage. It also encompasses the fusion of traditional elements with newly created resources, such as art, to draw people into the regions.

By fiscal year 2028, the project aims to move from feasibility studies and plan development to actual project implementation and infrastructure development, depending on the progress and needs of each initiative. The approach is to recreate and utilize the most radiant aspects of a region's past and blend them with innovative tourism activities that attract and engage visitors.

This ambitious project represents Japan's commitment to sustainable tourism development, leveraging its rich cultural and natural heritage to create new legacies that will continue to enchant visitors for generations to come. Through careful planning, collaboration, and innovative thinking, Japan seeks to enhance its appeal as a premier tourism destination while fostering economic growth and cultural preservation within its regions.
